Tapestry

Tapestry is an ancient form of textile art and tapestry weaving became an important art form during the Middle Ages, particularly in Europe. Tapestries were often used to adorn the walls of castles and palaces, creating sophisticated interiors but also having practical use providing insulation, covering openings and giving privacy around beds.

Tapestry weaving is a rare craft, woven in a frame and not on a loom. In the mountain region in western Ukraine the art of tapestry weaving has been taught at the national artschool since the 1900 century. The training takes years to master and an equal amount of time is spent teaching the artistic side and the use of colour, as the technical side.

The tapestry is tightly woven and robust while at the same time allowing the weaver the flexibility in composition equal to an artist doing watercolour. The warp threads are stretched on a frame and act as a grid, then the weavers use different techniques using coloured weft threads to form the pictorial or abstract designs.

Traditionally tapestries have been used on walls or floors but in the creative hands of Beata Heuman there is now also an ottoman sold exclusively by
Beata Heuman.

Vandra Rugs offers design and production of tapestries and are happy to be your creative partner for realization of unique pieces to last for years to come.

And Then You Kissed Me Tapestry Collection
Vandra Rugs is proud to announce a unique collaboration with British artist Jasper Galloway, translating his celebrated painting And Then You Kissed Me into a curated tapestry collection.

A Captivating Painting Transformed into Woven Craft
The painting And Then You Kissed Me captures the explosive energy of a kiss through a fragmented yet harmonious range of colours and forms. This collection breathes new life into the artwork, translating Galloway’s vision into tapestry, offering a new way to experience his artistry.

With the complexity of the original painting’s movement, the weavers’ expertise in tapestry allowed them to introduce new patterns and textures, enhancing the artwork’s visual impact. Handwoven with premium wool and available in sizes up to 10 meters, these tapestries are designed for both wall installations and floor rugs. Each piece is individually numbered.

Seasons

Vandra Rugs is thrilled to announce the Seasons Tapestry Collection, a new series of tapestry rugs designed by Ami Katz. Inspired by the vibrant colours of the changing seasons, this collection brings the beauty of nature and mythical creatures into a space. Born from years of watercolour sketching, each piece reflects a harmonious blend of motifs and colours.

Seasons originated from Ami’s paintings, capturing the essence of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Its design allows for the choice of a single season, mirroring the pattern for a more complex appearance,
or combine multiple seasons for a diverse colour palette.

“ The Seasons Tapestry Collection allows us to bring the changing beauty of the seasons indoors, offering versatility and a connection to nature in each piece,”
says Ami Katz.

The Pendula Tapestry Rug Collection
Vandra Rugs is proud to announce its collaboration with designer Claire Fouché to unveil The Pendula Collection, a captivating tapestry collection inspired by British embroidery and South African floral motifs. Claire Fouché is a multi-disciplinary designer whose work spans from jewellery design at Fabergé to interior decoration, textile art and textile design. With a passion for storytelling and a keen eye for detail, her designs reflect her diverse cultural experiences and creative exploration.

Heritage Harmony: English Embroidery Meets African Flora
The inspiration for Pendula comes from Claire Fouché’s encounter with a magnificent 18th-century embroidery at Parham, a stately home in West Sussex. Captivated by the blend of intricate details and contemporary shapes, she sought to create a tapestry design with a similar sense of elegance but also a touch of modernity. Drawing inspiration from her time in South Africa, she incorporated native floral motifs like the King Protea, Protea Aristata and Pendula, as well as Cape Forget-me-Nots and ‘Fynbos’ evergreens. The tapestry rug Pendula is handwoven in sizes to your specification up to 10 meters in both length and width and is offered in three original colourways African Earth Brown, Eucalyptus Green and Noble Blue as well as in bespoke colours.
